BLOGGINGHEADS.TV EDITORIAL POLICY
At Bloggingheads.tv, we aim to set up conversations about interesting and important issues on which reasonable people have a diversity of viewpoints. We choose participants based on their past contributions to public discourse. This doesn’t mean we see particular merit in their views; it may just mean that they are articulate spokespeople for views that have been influential.
A Bloggingheads diavlog is an unusual media format, in that it’s a peer-to-peer model, with no moderator. Once a conversation is set in motion, we have no control over its course; what control we have comes earlier, in the initial choice of the participants, and in sometimes suggesting topics they might cover.
Whether or not the diavlog turns out the way we or the participants expected, we are committed to posting the video once it’s recorded. When controversial subjects are explored, the careful selection of participants usually results in a worthwhile conversation in which the subject is illuminated via contrasting perspectives. But even when the result is unsatisfactory—a lopsided debate, or an incoherent analysis—the diavlog goes up on the site. (We can imagine a diavlog that’s so offensive that we would choose not to publish it—one featuring a racist diatribe, for example—but that hasn’t happened yet.)
So, for the record:
- While we strive for balanced treatment of controversial subjects, any single diavlog is unlikely to capture the full range of opinion on a particular topic.
- The views expressed in the diavlogs are those of the participants and should not be attributed to Bloggingheads personnel or Brainwave.tv.
- Only in the most extreme circumstances would we refrain from posting a diavlog or remove it from the site after posting—if, for example, it was plainly defamatory or we found it irredeemably repugnant.
