Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
Something being underestimated in the "why he won" conversation is a kind of subterranean Kennedy-backlash that finally had its day. There is a hard nub of Herald-reading, WEEI-listening, anti-Brahmin Bay Staters who were always laying in wait for Kennedy to die so they could finally meaningfully vote GOP. I actually think that whichever Republican ran for this seat whenever it became vacant was bound to overperform, because This Was Their Day.
Yes Brown was great, and Marsha awful, and the economy bad and anti-incumbency thick in the air, but I don't think you can get Brown over the hump without the post-Kennedy boost. This is why I'm not sure Brown is nearly so great a "blueprint for a GOP resurgence" as he is being made out to be. (how would that blueprint even go? step one: have a legendary American aristocrat own the seat for half a century; step two:...)

There is also the issue of Senator elect Brown being conservative for Massachusetts; which might almost place him just right of center. In normal times he would find himself in the RINO camp with the "true" conservative purists that are claiming him as the best thing since indoor plumbing at this point in time.

Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
Quoting piscivorous: There is also the issue of Senator elect Brown being conservative for Massachusetts; which might almost place him just right of center. I'll believe he's a moderate when I see it. Massachusetts likes some Republicans, but they are squishy Romney-Weld-"Good with a checkbook" Republicans, not anti-gay, pro-torture, big-business conservatives like Brown. Lest we forget, before Browns daughter took the stage at his victory rally, the band played "Sweet Home Alabama." If Brown does anything but vote "no" in obstructionist lock-step with GOP leadership, it'll be a certified miracle.
I figure he realizes it was a perfect astrological alignmnet that put him in his seat, and he doesn't have long there. Things revert to the mean, so he's gotta maximize. Rather than legislate like he's from Massachusetts, he's gonna legislate like he's trying to suck up to the GOP base writ large... and then we know where it goes from there
I'd be very happy to be proven wrong though.

@Women, education, money, and mates
Out of curiosity, to all the women out there I have a question for you.
Would you prefer your boyfriends, husbands make more money than you?
Out of your longer term relationships, how many were with men who did make less?
Let's remove people who were in the same ball park as you, I am talking about a significantly lower salary.
My suspicion is that on average women would prefer someone as successful as they are or more so. Whereas men are more open about income level (How noble we men are !)

Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
Why does BhTV insist on this pairing? I think it's becoming clear to all that it doesn't work for them. It's clear to me.
Can Bh expand the possible?
Come on: mix it up.
The Palins were HS sweethearts who had five kids. I think that is probably a huge reason for their marriage.

Re: @Women, education, money, and mates
For me, it depends on my age. When I was 20-30, I didn't think about it. What was important for me was more like ambition and purposefulness.
As I get older, money as money yes does become more important, because I would want to stay away from any potential sponge situations. If I were making over $100K, I wouldn't care if my mate was making $70K or more. If he were making less, it would be important to me to know that he found his calling in life and it gave him a lot of meaning.
So basically, with age comes money and the purposefulness factor remains.
I don't want a lay about. Ever.

What a marvellous charming diavlog! BHT should certainly keep pairing up this lovely couple. They start out talking about the Senate election in Mass but quickly veer away into what - it seems! - women really want to talk about - Lurrvve, Sex and Marriage. And what's wrong with that, eh? It preoccupies most male minds too, but we just don't like to go on about it. Anyway, great to see these two have at it without the least grovel or cringe to the male sensibility. Women! Need I say? - what a superb bunch! I think I'm more than ready to trade down to this junior social status but great-in-bed personality that the divine Ann is so keen on!

There's much more to it than money, Jon.

I read a survey of women medical doctors and their marriage habits. However, this was some time ago - perhaps 20 to 25 years. It stated 1/3 of them don't marry, 1/3 marry other M.D.'s, and 1/3 marry like minded professionals. What was telling here was there was no marrying down, so to speak. Maybe things have changed since that time.

Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
The section linked as "Health care bill: too extreme/not extreme enough" encapsulates the conservative position in a nutshell (nutcase?): First AA says the bill is a radical massive government takeover of healthcare. Then, when EB points out that this is not true, AA admits that is not true, but says it is a way-station toward this end, a set-up. AA is a law professor and clearly capable of analytical thinking. Indeed, she does some on this meme. But the presumption underlying her thinking is clear: whatever the bill says, the goal is pre-known. Bravo, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, et al. Facts are not important, all that is important is that people believe what we want them to believe. If people believe the Democrats aspire to create a former East Germany out of the USA, detailed debate about health-care or anything else is really irrelevant.

John That's the point that this diavlog raises. Emily and Ann discussed whether women with higher education or power should consider marrying someone who doesn't match those attributes. There may be more updated statistics, but they seemed to be offering just their opinion not facts.

Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
All diavlogs featuring Althouse have a Celebrity Jeopardy aspect about them: suspiciously easy. The topics seem designed to provide a quick escape route to frivolity.
It may be because she isn't knowledgeable about anything?

Who people marry and why is not a priority with me. I have never studied the topic. The statistic I gave I heard years ago and for some reason has stuck with me.

Consider the lapsed intellectual,
who forgoes being Asexual.
Becoming so lusty
with girls who are busty,
he now puts the A before textual.

This is the kind of conversation one would expect to see between girlfriends over coffee at the local Starbucks. Interesting to them, but not so much to anyone else.
Forget the book Ann, unless it is very narrow in scope, perhaps an examination of what midwestern women law professors want. Maybe a good masters' thesis subject....good enough to get the sociology degree, but never read by anyone beyond your advisor.

I think a book on the topic would be very timely, and that Althouse could possibly parlay her current blogress success into a best seller. I agree completely with her about professional women looking at men in the trades (hot). I think a good way to approach these sorts of relationships is by compartmentalization...men are supposed to be good at that, right? A precious relationship in bed, where the man is the man, and she'd walk over broken glass to keep him, is ideal. That's not to say the woman can't be tenderly agressive, and the like, but over all he's the man and she's the woman.

And for driving on road trips, please.
Cooking? Together! One cooks, one cleans up, or they do both together.
Althouse found her Meade, that lucky girl, and how did the business lady and the farmer turn out? Does anyone know? Yes, you're probably right about the book. Oprah would love it especially since Althouse voted for Obama (!!!????). It could be one of the offerings in her "Amazons Return" series.
I guess I just can't

I guess I just can't relate, given my background, although I do have to admit I admire a guy who can fix a car, which is becoming a lost art these days.
Yes! Build the arbor. Take a class at one of the local community colleges. The outlay in tools$$$$ would make it impractical to buy them for one project, but taking a class would solve that. Okay! I'll put it on my procrastination, I mean To Do list.

Re: Find Your Todd Palin (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
Yes, very true. I was just reading her post from 2006 about Gerry Studds, the one when she says the Democrats thunderously applauded Studds. The vote to censure was 420-3 or something like that, and yet she quotes Paglia and goes merrily on insisting that the House Dems thunderously applauded Studds. Amazing.
She is not.
