The DMZ
On The DMZ, Bill and Matt debate what the embassy attacks in Egypt and Libya tell us about Obama’s policies in the Arab world. Has the Arab Spring been a positive or a negative development? Bill suggests neither Obama nor Romney wants to engage in a general debate about foreign policy. They disagree over whether it makes sense to compare Obama to Jimmy Carter. Matt argues that despite Obama’s post-convention bounce, the election will still come down to the wire. Plus: Are Obama and Romney introverts?

The Posner Show
On The Posner Show, Sarah speaks with Natan about increasing “price tag” terrorism perpetrated against Palestinians in the Israeli occupied territories. What’s fueling these attacks? And why haven’t the Israeli Defense Forces stopped them? Natan thinks the violent extremists may have sparked a backlash. But can the settlement establishment do anything about the attacks? Finally, Natan argues that Israeli apathy is one reason the peace process isn’t moving forward.

Foreign Entanglements
On Foreign Entanglements, Rob speaks with Michael about the political conventions. Michael, who attended both conventions, says it was like going from a country club to New York City. Rob and Michael talk about newfound Democratic confidence in foreign policy, and they wonder how hawkish the party can become. Rob asks Michael who he thinks might take the key foreign policy positions in the Obama and Romney administrations, and they evaluate John Bolton, John McCain, and George W. Bush as picks for Secretary of State. Looking past the 2012 election, Michael asks Rob about the prospects of a 2016 Rand Paul run for the GOP nomination.
Sep 8, 2012 — Conor Friedersdorf & Sarah Posner

Friedersdorf
On a special crossover edition of Friedersdorf and The Posner Show, Conor and Sarah review the political conventions. Conor was disturbed by Joe Biden’s bloodlust, but was impressed by Bill Clinton’s speech. Turning a skeptical eye to the speeches by Michelle Obama and Ann Romney, Sarah and Conor discuss the folly of understanding a politician “as a person.” They then talk about how the tension between neoconservatives and budget hawks at the Republican National Convention went unacknowledged. Conor explores the problems in Romney’s plan for Medicare. Finally, Conor and Sarah lament that Democrats have abandoned the civil liberties positions they held in 2008.
Sep 7, 2012 — Glenn Loury & Gershom Gorenberg

The Glenn Show
Glenn and Gershom discuss Israel and the US election. Gershom finds the controversy over Jerusalem in the Democratic platform to be disconnected from reality. Glenn suggests that this only illustrates the power of symbols in political communication. Do Israelis prefer Romney over Obama? Glenn thinks that pro-Israel pandering in US politics is more about evangelical Christians than Jewish voters. Gershom and Glenn have different ideas about why some Americans still view Obama as foreign. Gershom suggests that American Jews will vote Democratic, but not based on Israel. Gershom argues that the segregated economic situation of the ultra-Orthodox in Israel is unsustainable, and he and Glenn explore how it might change.
